Work backwards from the mechanics. Diffuse sensing range shrinks with dark or low-reflectivity targets, so a 300 mm rated sensor may be reliable at 150 mm on a dull target. If your target is matte, allow margin — or use retro-reflective sensing where the reflector is on the far side.

Does wiring polarity matter?

No. Omron specifies polarity-free red light for this range, so supply polarity errors do not damage the sensor. The output type (PNP) still has to match your input card.
