Product Overview

The CX8090 is a compact DIN rail controller with an Arm9 processor at 400 MHz and a 2-port switched Ethernet interface. It runs Windows Embedded CE 6 with TwinCAT 2 PLC and supports real-time Ethernet, ADS over UDP/TCP, Modbus TCP client/server and open TCP/IP or UDP/IP communication.

K-bus or E-bus terminals can be attached as required, with automatic recognition. It is the entry point into the CX8000 series for machines that need a PLC on the rail and networked communication, but not a full Windows IPC.

Why Buyers Specify This Model

Two switched Ethernet ports — line topology without an external switch

The CX8090’s two RJ45 ports are internally switched, so a series of controllers or a controller plus a panel can be daisy-chained. That removes a switch and its cabinet space from the bill of materials, and removes a failure point.

The same ports carry the protocols the CX8090 speaks natively: real-time Ethernet, ADS over UDP/TCP, Modbus TCP as client or server, and open TCP/IP or UDP/IP sockets. If a machine has to talk to a third-party device over Modbus TCP or send plain sockets, that is handled on the controller rather than through a gateway.

Integrated 1-second UPS — persistent data without a separate module

The CX8090 includes a 1-second UPS with 1 MB reserved on the microSD card. On power loss the controller has enough hold-up time to write persistent application data to non-volatile storage instead of losing the recipe, counter or position reference.

That is a genuine engineering difference from the CX1020/CX1030 generation, where persistent data retention was a separate design conversation. Beckhoff also notes that a UPS OCT connection is not available on this model — the integrated UPS is what you get.

Small, fanless and only 3 W

The housing measures 64 mm × 100 mm × 73 mm and weighs roughly 180 g. Maximum power consumption is 3 W, with a further 10 W available for the E-bus or K-bus (5 V / max. 2 A). Cooling is passive.

Operating temperature is 0 … +55 °C — note that this is narrower than the EtherCAT Terminals it drives, which are specified to -25 … +60 °C. In an unventilated cabinet the controller is the limiting element, not the I/O.

Lifecycle and Successor Models

In production. The CX8090 is listed in Beckhoff’s current product catalogue and its official product page is live on beckhoff.com. This is not a discontinued part.

The CX8000 series has since been joined by newer Arm-based families — CX7000, CX81xx and CX82xx — so if you are starting a new design rather than maintaining an existing one, it is worth comparing those before committing. For an installed machine, the CX8090 remains the like-for-like replacement.

Does the CX8090 need an external Ethernet switch?

Not usually. Its two RJ45 ports are internally switched, so devices can be daisy-chained in a line topology. The transmission rate is 100 Mbit/s.

What happens to my data if the power fails?

The CX8090 has an integrated 1-second UPS that holds the controller up long enough to write persistent data to the microSD card (1 MB is reserved for this). Note that the UPS OCT connection option is not available on this model.

Which I/O can I connect?

E-bus (EtherCAT Terminals) or K-bus (Bus Terminals), with automatic recognition. The controller supplies up to 2 A to the terminals. 512 MB microSD is included; 16 GB is available as an ordering option, with 32 GB and 64 GB listed by Beckhoff as announced for Q4 2026.

What is the operating temperature range?

0 … +55 °C, with storage from -25 … +85 °C. This is narrower than the -25 … +60 °C of the EtherCAT Terminals, so in a hot cabinet the controller is the part to watch. Protection rating is IP20.
