Product information
Product Overview
The EL3314 connects four thermocouples directly. A microprocessor linearises the characteristic across the whole temperature range, so the controller receives a temperature rather than a raw microvolt signal. Resolution is 16 bit and the representation is adjustable.
It is the terminal for high-temperature measurement — furnaces, ovens, extruders, exhaust and process heat — where an RTD cannot survive.
Why Buyers Specify This Model
Thermocouple types covered, and the default
Beckhoff lists type B, C, E, J, K, L, N, R, S, T and U, with type K as the default. Type K is the general-purpose industrial thermocouple; types R, S and B are the noble-metal types for very high temperatures, and types J, T and E cover lower ranges.
Because linearisation is handled in the terminal, you do not have to implement a polynomial for the thermocouple type in the PLC program. Change the configured type and the terminal follows.
Cold junction compensation — internal or external
A thermocouple measures a temperature difference, so the terminal has to know the temperature at its own terminals. The EL3314 provides internal cold junction compensation and also accepts an external cold junction.
Beckhoff publishes the measurement uncertainty at 23 °C ambient with internal cold junction, broken down by thermocouple type — for example type K is significantly better than type B or C. Where accuracy matters, read the figure for your specific type rather than assuming a single number for the module.
Wire break detection and the voltage mode
The terminal provides channel-by-channel wire break detection and adjustable firmware filters. Wire break detection is not a nicety on a thermocouple: the signal is a few tens of millivolts, so a broken or corroded junction presents as a plausible-looking temperature rather than an obvious fault.
The EL3314 can also be used as a voltage input measuring ±30 / ±60 / ±75 mV, with a measurement uncertainty below ±0.14% of full scale at ±75 mV. Resolution is 16 bit with the representation adjustable to 0.1 °C, 0.01 °C or 1 / 2 / 4 µV per digit.

Ordering This Part
Tell us the model and, where an order code exists, the complete code — Beckhoff variants differ in ways that matter, as set out above. For discontinued models, a nameplate photograph is the fastest way to confirm exactly what you have.
- Exact model or order code (including any suffix such as
-0111or-ESvariants) - Quantity required
- Whether you need the terminal alone or a complete station with coupler and power supply
- For replacements: a photo of the existing nameplate or the old order code
We confirm availability and condition before quoting. We do not publish stock levels or lead times on this page because they change; ask and we will answer specifically for your requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which thermocouple types does the EL3314 support?
Type B, C, E, J, K, L, N, R, S, T and U, with type K as the factory default. Linearisation is performed in the terminal.
How accurate is it, really?
Beckhoff publishes the measurement uncertainty at 23 °C ambient with internal cold junction, separately for each thermocouple type. The figure differs substantially between types — the noble-metal types are inherently less accurate than type K. Ask us for the number for your specific type before selecting.
Do I need an external cold junction?
Not necessarily. The EL3314 has internal cold junction compensation and also accepts an external cold junction. An external reference is used where the terminal’s own ambient is not representative of the measurement environment.
What is the resolution and the conversion time?
Resolution is 16 bit, represented as 0.1 °C, 0.01 °C or 1 / 2 / 4 µV per digit. Conversion time ranges from approximately 2.5 s down to 10 ms depending on configuration and filter setting, with approximately 250 ms as the default.
Can it detect a broken thermocouple?
Yes. Beckhoff specifies channel-by-channel wire break detection, plus internal and external cold junction and adjustable firmware filters.
