Product information
Product Overview
The FX5U-80MR/ES is a Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC iQ-F series CPU module — the FX5U standard type with 40 inputs / 40 outputs, relay outputs, powered from AC 100–240 V, and with removable screw terminal blocks (M3 screws). It is the current-generation micro PLC that replaced the long-running FX3U family, and it is in current production (official sales status: On sale), so unlike discontinued controllers this page covers both new-build supply and genuine spare demand. Its core specification is identical across the FX5U platform: a 34 ns LD instruction execution time, 64 k-step program capacity (128 k steps with CPU firmware 1.100 or later), 120 kbytes device/label memory and 5 Mbytes data memory. Ladder, ST, FBD/LD and SFC programming are all supported from GX Works3. The value proposition is what is built in rather than bolted on: Ethernet and RS-485 ports are standard (no communication module needed for HMI, programming, MODBUS RTU/TCP or socket communication), a high-speed counter handles up to 6 ch at 200 kHz plus 2 ch at 10 kHz, positioning runs up to 4 axes at 200 kHz, and both an SD memory card slot and a web-server function are on board. The screw-terminal FX5U also carries 2 channels of analog input and 1 channel of analog output built in, so sensor inputs and drive setpoints usually need no analog module at all.

All values above are taken verbatim from Mitsubishi Electric’s official MELSEC iQ-F specification data (mitsubishielectric.com product specification pages) and the official MELSEC iQ-F FX5S/FX5UJ/FX5U/FX5UC hardware manual for external dimensions and mass. No third-party or estimated figures are used. Where the official data carries a condition or footnote, the value shown is the headline figure — request the full datasheet with your enquiry for the qualified figures.
Lifecycle Status & Availability
Mitsubishi Electric lists the FX5U-80MR/ES as on sale — an active, current-production MELSEC iQ-F CPU module, not a discontinued or phase-out item. Spares, firmware updates and the GX Works3 engineering environment are all still supported by the manufacturer.
Stock on this page is real trade stock: condition, firmware revision and quantity are confirmed individually at quotation. We do not publish a fixed lead time or inventory figure, because both change weekly.
This model takes an AC 100–240 V supply, which suits cabinets where a 24 V DC bus is not available or where the PLC is retrofitted into existing AC-powered panels.
Typical Applications
- Replacement and spare supply for existing FX5U-80MR/ES installations where the exact catalogue number and revision matter
- Machine-building and OEM panel construction on the current iQ-F platform
- Loads that switch mains or high-inrush circuits, where relay outputs are preferred over semiconductors
- Panel builds that need built-in analog I/O without buying an extra analog module
- Processes needing MODBUS RTU/TCP, CC-Link IE Field Network Basic or simple CPU-to-CPU communication over the built-in ports
Related & Compatible Models
Relay-output models below it in the same range: FX5U-64MR/ES (32/32) and FX5U-32MR/ES (16/16). This is the largest CPU module in the FX5U screw-terminal range — beyond 40/40, expansion is via FX5 extension modules or remote I/O.
Requesting a Quotation
To quote the FX5U-80MR/ES accurately, please state the exact catalogue number, the required quantity, and whether you need the module alone or with expansion modules, SD card, battery and mounting accessories. Where a machine is down, say so and attach the existing unit’s nameplate photo — that lets us confirm the firmware revision before shipping and avoid a second delivery.
We do not publish stock levels, prices or delivery times on this page: they are confirmed individually against real availability at the time of your enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 40/40 the maximum for the FX5U range?
Yes for CPU modules with integrated I/O. Beyond 40 inputs and 40 outputs you expand with FX5 extension modules or remote I/O — the official specification allows up to 512 total I/O points when CC-Link or AnyWireASLINK remote I/O is used.
How much space does it take?
285 mm wide with a 258 mm mounting hole pitch, approximately 1.2 kg. That is the widest FX5U screw-terminal CPU module, so confirm the DIN rail or panel cut-out before ordering.
Relay outputs only?
This catalogue number is the relay-output version, 2 A per point with a maximum of 8 A per common terminal across 4 points. If your loads are fast-switching, discuss the transistor options before committing.
Does the larger CPU change the scan performance?
No. The instruction execution time is the same 34 ns LD across the FX5U platform; only the integrated I/O count and physical size differ.
Availability?
Officially on sale, in current production.
