Product information
Product Overview
The EL4004 generates four analog voltage outputs in the range 0 … 10 V, with 12-bit resolution and electrical isolation between the E-bus and the signal voltage. The output channels share a common ground.
It is the standard terminal for driving proportional valves, variable-frequency drives with an analog reference, servo amplifiers and analog panel instruments.
Why Buyers Specify This Model
Voltage output, and where that is the right choice
A 0 … 10 V output is the conventional interface for a VFD reference, a proportional valve amplifier or a servo drive’s speed command input. The devices expect it, the manufacturers document it, and it responds fast: the EL4004 converts in approximately 250 µs.
The limitation is cable length and noise, as with any voltage signal. Over a long run in a noisy cabinet, induced noise appears directly on the voltage and the drive sees it as a reference change. That is the case for a current output terminal instead.
Distributed Clocks and the watchdog
The EL4004 supports Distributed Clocks with an accuracy far below 1 µs, which lets the analog output be updated in step with the rest of a synchronised system — relevant for coordinated motion and for measurement applications.
Beckhoff also lists an optional watchdog that outputs a user-specific value with a ramp, and user synchronisation that can be activated. The watchdog is the safety-relevant part: if the controller stops updating, the output goes to a defined value rather than simply holding its last command.
Resolution, load and accuracy
Resolution is 12 bit, with an output error below 0.1% of end value. The permitted load is greater than 5 kΩ and the output is short-circuit proof, so it is not intended to drive a low-impedance load directly.
The EL4004 takes its supply from the 24 V power contacts (typically 40 mA) and draws typically 140 mA from the E-bus. Weight is approximately 85 g. If 12-bit resolution is not enough, the EL4104 provides the same four 0 … 10 V channels at 16 bit.

Ordering This Part
Tell us the model and, where an order code exists, the complete code — Beckhoff variants differ in ways that matter, as set out above. For discontinued models, a nameplate photograph is the fastest way to confirm exactly what you have.
- Exact model or order code (including any suffix such as
-0111or-ESvariants) - Quantity required
- Whether you need the terminal alone or a complete station with coupler and power supply
- For replacements: a photo of the existing nameplate or the old order code
We confirm availability and condition before quoting. We do not publish stock levels or lead times on this page because they change; ask and we will answer specifically for your requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
EL4004 or EL4104 — what is the difference?
Resolution, and the power supply arrangement. Both give four 0 … 10 V channels with distributed clocks. The EL4004 is 12 bit and takes its supply from the 24 V power contacts; the EL4104 is 16 bit and is supplied via the E-bus, with an output rate of max. 4 ksps.
What load can the output drive?
Greater than 5 kΩ, and the output is short-circuit proof. It is a voltage source, not a power output — do not connect a low-impedance load or a coil directly.
What happens to the output if the controller stops?
Beckhoff specifies an optional watchdog that outputs a user-specific value with a ramp, and user synchronisation that can be activated. Configure it — an analog command that simply freezes at its last value is rarely what you want on a machine.
What is the conversion time?
Approximately 250 µs for the EL4004, with 12-bit resolution and an output error below 0.1% of the end value. It supports Distributed Clocks with accuracy well below 1 µs.
What is the difference between EL4004 and ES4004?
Only the wiring level — the ES4004 has a pluggable wiring level. Both are listed in Beckhoff’s ordering information.
